Our Story

I decided to create Azoia because I wanted a simpler and more natural way to fuel my body while marathon training. It started with maple syrup and salt while on my bike trainer.

After lots of research, I found the
key to Maurten’s success to be their ‘Hydrogel’ technology. Hydrogel is created from soluble fiber - large molecules that dissolve into water and make it much thicker (more viscous).

I got curious: does this have to be made in lab or can we find it in nature? So, I began experimenting - using myself as my own test subject. I eventually found something that worked very well for me: nice taste, great consistency, no stomach issues, and loads of energy packed in.

Where does the name ‘Azoia’ come from? Azoia (Pronounced Ah-zoy-ah) is a small town in Portugal. Why is that significant? When I visited, I was struck by how simple they made life and their appreciation for nature. They took the gifts the land gave them and did not ask for much more. They slowed life down and ate simply.

The town had a lasting effect on my mindset. I really want to embody those aspects with this company and products I am creating, so I thought it fit nicely. Plus, it’s unique and fun to say.
